Why Do We Celebrate Engineer's Day?
Engineer's Day in India is celebrated on September 15th to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (Sir M.V.), one of India's most eminent engineers and statesmen. Born in 1861, his contributions to engineering and nation-building were monumental.
Sir M.V. was the chief engineer responsible for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara dam in Mysore and the chief designer of the flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad. His patented system of automatic weir water floodgates, first installed in 1903 at the Khadakwasla reservoir near Pune, was a revolutionary invention. For his immense contributions, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955.
